Barks for Beers Returns for 2024

Updated 4/23/24 – The first version of this article completely missed 2014!  This has been updated, 2014 is now recognized in the data below.

Popular fundraising event Barks for Beers, operated by local charity Divine Canines is returning to Central Texas for their 10th year.  Starting on May 1st, visit any of the 30 breweries listed below to pick up a pint glass and Pawsport for $30+tax.  Then, you can use that Pawsport at all 30 breweries throughout the month of May to receive one pour at each.

Here at Craft Beer Austin (or really just me specifically), we like to go into way too much detail about beer related things that are going on around Austin.  Barks for Beers actually provides a great data set, as we now have 10 years of brewery participation that we can analyze – and you better believe that we will be doing that below.  Don’t skim this article, it’s good.

But first, the charity: Divine Canines provides free therapy dog services to various populations including older adults, hospitalized patients, school reading programs and more. Their mission is: Partnering with our dogs to enhance the well-being of those in need. Barks for Beers helps us keep their training costs affordable and helps them keep their volunteers, human and canine, equipped to provide the best possible free services.

As always, don’t forget to tip the taproom staff!

Ten Years of Barks for Beers

We’ll specifically go through this year’s list below, but I wanted to start by sharing these cool charts I made.  The first one is brewery participation among all breweries that are currently open (and have participated at least once).  The second chart is all breweries, even closed ones – enjoy the nostalgia trip.  (Note: If you’re on a computer you can right click -> “Open image in new tab” for a larger image that can be zoomed in.  If you’re on a phone, just pinch to zoom as usual.)

Important note: The event did not occur in 2020 due to the pandemic, but the brewery list was already available – as such, the 2020 year is colored white in the below chart to recognize the breweries that signed on to participate.  With that in mind, it’s actually been 11 years since Barks for Beers began, but excluding 2020 means there’s been 10 years of operation.

Here are some interesting notes I’ve pulled from these charts:

  • No breweries participated all 10 years (11 including 2020).  Circle would have been the only one – but sadly they closed last year.
  • 2017-2018 was a pivotal year for Barks for Beers, as it marked the tipping point where it went from a small event to a popular one.  As a result, many of the larger breweries that were on board for years 1-4 (Jester King, ABW, ABGB, Lazarus, and Zilker), decided to bow out, and in exchange the smaller breweries that were still looking to get their name out signed on in their place.
    • Keep in mind that the event is always limited to 30 breweries – so, making room for the smaller and more out of the way locations that do not maintain quite as much traffic is a win/win for everyone.
      • (Unless you think Barks for Beers should uncap their 30 brewery limit, which I suppose is an argument one could make.)
  • Now for our leaderboard:
    • Infamous has participated every year except 2014 and 2018, making them one of the leaders at 9 years (including 2020).  They are the king of the “small and out of the way” breweries.
    • Twisted X also bowed out for 2018, but otherwise has been on the list since even year one.  So what’s the second year they didn’t participate? That would be this year, 2024.
    • The two 8 year breweries:
      • Independence joined in 2015, then missed 2018 and 2019, but were back for 2020 and have been on since.
      • The other brewery at 8 total is Red Horn, and this is simply because they weren’t open yet – the brewery opened in late 2015 (after that year’s event), and were still getting things up and running by the event in 2016.  But starting in 2017, they’ve been on every time, no exceptions.
    • All five of the 7 year participant breweries have the same story: They joined in 2018, and have been on board ever since with no skips.
      • This includes Black Star, The Brewtorium, Live Oak, Southern Heights, and Suds Monkey.
  • Other breweries that have joined continuously since they first opened their doors: Vista, Hopsquad, Nomadic, Frontyard, Ghost Note, Willard’s/Big Country, Vacancy, and The Stay Put.
  • There are 7 breweries joining for the first time this year:
    • Four of them are new breweries that just opened in the last 12 months.
    • And three of them have been open for a while – but they’re outside of Austin proper, and have signed on this year to invite us to visit some of the hot spots that are further away.  More specifics on this in the next section of the article.
  • A funny story: Rogness joined in 2014-2015, Flying Man in 2018-2020, Willard’s in 2022, and Big Country in 2023-2024.  So while it’s four different breweries, you could say that 2400 Patterson Industrial Dr has 8 years of participation.
  • Finally, let’s give a salute to the breweries that signed on in 2020, but were then unable to stay open until the following year: Flying Man, Orf, Skull Mechanix, Compadre, and The Brewer’s Table.

2024 Brewery List

Onward and upward!  Next, we can go through this year’s Barks for Beers list, along with my snarky commentary.  Enjoy

BreweryLocationYears of ParticipationFun Facts
12 Fox Beer Co.Dripping Springs4After taking last year off (the only year missed since they opened), 12 Fox returns for their 4th year.
5th Element BrewingLeander1Cedar Park/Leander has always had the Red Horn anchor, and this year there's two more joining the team with brand new brewery 5th Element on board.
Big Country Organic Brewing Co.Pflugerville3BCOBC is back again, but this year they have some Pflugerville friends joining...
Black Star Co-opCentral Austin7Hey, the red line serves an actual purpose now that there's a stop by the stadium. There are three home FC games in May, go buy your tickets now before other people catch on to this beer + football synergy.
Blue Owl BrewingEast Austin6Now here's a fun one: Blue Owl was on board from 2016-2020 and then stopped for the last 3 years, before coming back in 2024. BOB is making some of the best beer in Austin and helping to keep the shrinking East Austin brewery scene alive.
The Brewtorium Brewery & KitchenCentral Austin7Speaking of breweries making great beer - Brewtorium is KILLING it lately. If you haven't been in a minute, do not underestimate these guys.
Celis BreweryNorth Austin3The hot story of the year is Celis' rebranding and reimagining, which included paying off the debt owed to B4B and being welcomed back to the brewery list. Read more here.
Fast Friends Beer Co.South Austin1Fast Friends opened mid-May last year, not early enough to join Barks, but every single person doing Barks went anyway. This year you can go again, and get a beer on the passport as well.
Frontyard BrewingSpicewood4As mentioned before, they're always on board. If you're unaware - Jonathan Harris (formerly brewer/owner of Hedgehog) is now lead brewer at Frontyard, and as a result they've become one of the best breweries around.
Ghost Note BrewingDripping Springs3Ghost Note is back again, and while we've generally thought of them as part of the Dripping Springs group, this year there's more going on a bit further to the south...
Hi Sign BrewingEast Austin5Nowadays we can reminisce on the awful old taproom of Hi Sign in the armpit of 183 and 71. As we all expected, the new location is exactly what they needed to go from an unknown to one of the hottest breweries in East Austin.
Hopsquad BrewingNorth Austin5Back to FC - the games are on the 15th, 18th, and 29th. Looks like the 15th is sponsored by Heineken, so that would be a good one to drink a bunch beforehand and spare your wallet at the game itself.
Independence Brewing Co.South Austin8It feels like Indie is throwing a party every weekend recently, I'd recommend following their instagram to keep up with the entertainment (really you should follow every brewery on this list).
Infamous Brewing Co.Lake Travis9Congrats on 9 years of Barks to Infamous!
Live Oak Brewing CompanyDel Valle7They have big trees and disc golf and great beer, you already knew that though.
Middleton BrewingSan Marcos1Okay I hope you're still reading because we're about to hit the most interesting part of the list. San Marcos breweries Middleton and Roughhouse, both of which have been open for a long time, are joining the B4B passport for the first time this year. It will be nice to have so many new people introduced to these two spots, and it's convenient that they joined together.
Nomadic BeerworksSouth Austin5I heard they set up a game console in the back corner? I don't even know what system it is but now you know where to find me.
Oasis Texas Brewing Co.Lake Travis5Don't forget to bring your own mini padlock to hang on the fence.
Obsidian BreweryLeander1I teased this one at 5th Element earlier in this list. Newly open Obsidian Brewery immediately joins the list, right down the street from 5th Element, making this a year that you are not going to want to skip out on the trip to Leander.
Prost Alehouse TexasPflugerville1I also teased this one at BCOBC - the long awaited Prost in downtown Pflugerville has blown out everyone's expectations with their great taproom and beer selection. If you haven't been yet, what are you doing?
Real Ale Brewing CompanyBlanco6Just like 12 Fox, Real Ale skipped last year. Huh. Well, they're back, and you're going to make that drive to Blanco this year, no excuses.
Red Horn - Parmer LaneCedar Park8Both Red Horn locations are back again!
Red Horn - Scottsdale DriveLeander3Both Red Horn locations are back again!
Roughhouse BrewingSan Marcos1As mentioned above, the two San Marcos breweries are hitting your passport. Roughhouse in particular is one of the top farmhouse breweries in the region, with a large beer garden that fits right at home in the Hill Country.
Southern Heights Brewing Co.East Austin7At the risk of overcrowding it, I'm going to let you in on a secret. Their Super Sour Sunday events are literally the best beer events in Austin. Follow their instagram and don't miss the next one.
Suds Monkey BrewingDripping Springs7I guess I haven't been talking about location counts. Dripping Springs + Driftwood only has 4 breweries this year, making it a lot easier to hit in one day this time. Though, the spread now goes both North (Frontyard + Lake Travis) and South (San Marcos), so routing could get a bit more difficult.
Texas Beer CompanyTaylor1Another crazy new addition is TBC, which has been around a long time in Taylor, and has decided to bring the masses to their city by offering everyone a beer. And I've got the recs for you - after TBC, go to Neighborhood Bottle Shoppe to pick up some cans, and then visit The Loose Screw for one of the coolest beer bars in all of Central Texas.
The Stay PutDowntown Austin2Rainey
Vacancy BrewingSouth Austin3Vacancy is another brewery that's killing it on the beer. And while SXSE food truck has moved on, the owners of the truck are opening a brick and mortar named Lao'd Bar, which I'm pretty excited about.
Vista BrewingDriftwood6Finally, our good friends at Vista always keep the party going at their rustic spot in Driftwood.

For an interactive map and spreadsheet with detailed brewery information, please check out their website: https://divinecanines.org/barksforbeers/

Additionally, there will be special prizes and a bingo contest on their socials: https://www.facebook.com/divinecaninestexas and https://instagram.com/barksforbeers

And of course Divine Canines will be bringing their pups to the breweries, and giving pets is approved and encouraged!
