Dig Deeper:
St. Elmo Brewing’s highly anticipated second location opens this weekend with limited hours on Springdale Road in East Austin. St Elmo Springdale boasts a new 15,000 square-foot brewery, indoor and outdoor seating, with a sprawling patio that features a dedicated children’s play area, complete with custom Bloom Boxes by CoXist Studios, popularized in Austin’s Fortlandia exhibit.
St. Elmo Brewing Co.’s founder, Bryan Winslow, expressed his excitement for the expansion: “We’re excited to finally open our doors and welcome such an amazing community that’s supported us along the way. This new location not only brings the same spirit of St. Elmo to a new part of Austin but also represents a significant expansion for the brewery. With a production space four times larger than the original, it will allow us to significantly increase our distribution capabilities across Central Texas.”

The design of the new Springdale location was led by OPA Design Studio, with the intent of creating an inviting and functional space for visitors. Key architectural features, like glass doors that offer views of the brewing and canning process, add to the immersive experience for craft beer lovers. According to Stephen Oliver, AIA, principal of OPA Design Studio, “This project gave us the chance to transform an overlooked industrial building into a vibrant destination for Austin’s craft beer enthusiasts.”
Adding to the visual appeal of the space, artist Emily Eisenhart, who designed the mural at St. Elmo’s original South Austin location, returned to create new artwork for the Springdale taproom. “I was thrilled to be invited by the St. Elmo team to design mural artwork for their newest taproom. Our collaborations, which began at their inaugural taproom down south, have always felt energizing and celebratory of our dynamic community here in Austin. The newest taproom is both an extension and an evolution of the original taproom artwork, with a refreshed color palette and motif inspired by brewing beer and building community in the vibrant East side, St. Elmo‘s newest home,” says Eisenhart.
St. Elmo Springdale will feature an extensive tap list of 36 draft beers, including popular favorites like “Carl,” “West,” and “Amber.” To celebrate the opening, the brewery is debuting a location-exclusive hazy IPA called “Zero.” The drink menu will also include Texas wines, ciders, frozen cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages like Hop Water, and a full coffee service in partnership with Spokesman. Onsite food trucks, Spicy Boys Chicken and Pueblo Viejo, will offer delicious food to complement the brewery’s offerings.

In keeping with its tradition of hosting community-driven events, St. Elmo Springdale will offer popular programming like “Grassy Thursday” and weekly trivia nights. The brewery will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, October 5, with live DJs, beer releases, and more.
