Taste Texas History at Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill’s Bluff SchuetzenFest
Kreische Brewery and Monument Hill State Historic Sites will host their fifth annual Bluff SchuetzenFest on Saturday, May 16th from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. This family festival celebrates German heritage and Texas’s rich brewing history. Guests can enjoy a full day of live music, a laser shooting gallery, guided tours of the Kreische brewery ruins, food and snacks, history and beer talks, and more.
Heinrich Kreische operated one of the earliest commercial breweries in Texas, producing “Bluff Beer” that offered a taste of home for fellow German immigrants. One of the places Kreische sold his beer was a pavilion on his property where a local German marksmanship and social club – the Bluff Schuetzenverein – gathered regularly. Schuetzenverein celebrations traditionally featured target shooting, dancing and music, and plenty of cold beer. Bluff SchuetzenFest is a modern reimagining of these historic gatherings, held on the very grounds they once took place.
At the festival, the Texas History on Tap Experience offers beer enthusiasts a chance to sample beers, meet the teams behind their favorite breweries, and raise a glass to Texas history. This year, no fewer than 18 craft breweries will offer ticketholders samples of their best, with many creating limited-release beers exclusively for SchuetzenFest.

“The history of beer in Texas is one of resilience, ingenuity, and immigrant entrepreneurship,” says Sites Manager Gavin Miculka. “Through Texas History on Tap, we’re able to highlight the legacy of brewers like Heinrich Kreische while also celebrating the creativity and success of Texas’s modern craft beer industry.”
Special releases are a unique way that Bluff SchuetzenFest provides a taste of Texas history. Breweries debut new beers, bring back limited runs, and take inspiration from historic recipes, ingredients, and techniques. In collaboration with Bird Creek Brewing, the Texas Craft Brewers Guild will debut an exclusive America250-themed beer at this year’s festival. Among other special releases, Wild Bunch Brewing will offer a small beer with notes of spruce and citrus inspired by an early Texas recipe, and Twisted X Brewing’s Kreische Bluff Bock – made with 100 percent German malt and hops – returns to pay homage to Kreische’s brewing legacy.

In addition, Beer Package holders can reserve a spot in a unique tasting experience: “An Introduction to Beer Judging.” Led by award-winning beer writer and international beer judge Ruvani de Silva, this interactive session will explain how beer competitions work, why they matter, and how judges evaluate beers. The session concludes with a tasting where participants will judge beers using professional style guidelines. This experience is $15 and may be added during check-out.
General admission to the festival grounds is $5 Adults, $2 Students, and free for children 5 and under. To participate in Texas History on Tap, guests must purchase a Beer Tasting Package. Prices will go up at the door. All ticket sales support education and preservation initiatives led by the nonprofit Friends of Kreische Brewery & Monument Hill.
