Austin Craft Brewing Company Update

Controversies Complicate Expansion

Austin Craft Brewing Company opened in late June at the former site of Orf Brewing and Starbase Brewing, located at 4700 Burleson Rd. Members of our team attended the launch event, and the brewery appeared to be off to a promising start, with a variety of beers on tap and solid plans for growth and new offerings.

However, since the opening, our team has received multiple unsolicited, anonymous messages regarding internal challenges at the brewery and potential personal issues involving owners Zach and Liz Hill. While these reports are anonymous, originating from throwaway Reddit accounts and burner email addresses, the content has been verified through secondary sources our team consulted while writing this article.

At Craft Beer Austin, our core principle is to support the Central Texas craft beer community by fostering collaboration and conversation among breweries and the people who work in this industry. In line with this mission, I feel it is our profound responsibility to report fair and unbiased information about topics that impact not just brewery owners, but the many people that work in the industry as well as the community at large.

We reached out to Austin Craft Brewing Company for comment and I have included their thoughts and responses to my questions throughout the article. I spoke with Mrs. Hill over the phone on October 3rd and received an email reply (attached at the bottom of the article) from Mr. Hill on October 4th. Mrs. Hill was open and forthcoming during our conversation, though clearly concerned about potential unwanted press.

Neighborhood Harassment Allegations

Several sources provided videos and court filings suggesting allegations of harassment by Zach Hill

Multiple Videos and an Image of someone alleged to be Austin Craft Brewing Company Owner, Zach Hill taking pictures and brandishing a weapon publicly in a neighborhood cul de sac

Craft Beer Austin received several messages, from various sources, containing images and video related to the alleged neighborhood incidents illustrated below. In addition, we were able to confirm that this topic was addressed with brewery team members as it was coming to light in the beer community.

Video 2: Reported to Craft Beer Austin with the title, “Neighbor repeatedly shouts “get off my property” at Zachariah Hill following an uninvited nighttime visit.”

Response from Austin Craft Brewing Company Owners:

Mrs. Hill countered the claims of harassment directly and stated that they are in fact the ones that were being harassed. This was stemming from her presidency of a neighborhood HOA where she served for 10 years. The incident was related to a dues issue with the person with whom the conflict has been ongoing. She claimed the she and Mr. Hill have been subject to insults and threats to their business and specifically mentioned that Mr. Hill has been assaulted and threatened directly. She also claims that there are online pictures and a police case against the unnamed person for harassment and cyber stalking. In addition, Mrs. Hill states that they were told by police that they had the right to carry a gun for personal protection based on the above issues and concerns.

Additional Comments from Mr. Hill are available in the email reply at the bottom of this article.

Dressing in Traditional West African Wardrobe

A public profile picture of Zach Hill wearing a dashiki, a traditional garment worn in various parts of West Africa. Dashikis are known for their vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and loose fit, often symbolizing pride in African heritage. He is also wearing a hat with gold embroidery, likely a kufi, another traditional headpiece that holds cultural significance in different African regions.

Response from Austin Craft Brewing Company Owners:
Mrs. Hill stated that they are proud to represent a heritage that they have familiarity with and highly respect. She was clear that they strongly believe there is nothing wrong with respectful dress in support of a culture.

Turnover and Staff Treatment

Turnover Rate at the Brewery

Our team had been notified and has corroborated through other sources that there has been a fairly high level of turnover, specifically with FOH employees. The explanation and implication from people close to the situation is that this was due to a difficult work environment, specifically related to tactics resembling bullying, ongoing threats of litigation against staff, and concerns related to some of the other items outlined in this article.

Response from Austin Craft Brewing Company Owners:
Mrs. Hill conceded that there has been some turnover and chalked it up to growing pains of a new business and the nature of the craft beer industry in general.

Environment of Intimidation and Paranoia

The other major theme that we corroborated through several sources were concerns around specific business management practices that seemed atypical or out of the normal expectation for industry workers. These included:

  • Excessive Surveillance – not atypical at any business, but the feeling from people we spoke with was that there were more than any normal amount and that the intent felt less about protection of assets and more about evaluation of staff habits.

  • NDAs – all employees were requested to sign NDAs, though several refused and it was dropped as a requirement for employment.

  • Litigation Threats – Craft Beer Austin heard from sources that, despite the lack of an NDA, team members were still often told that anything disparaging that comes out against the brewery would open them up to litigation.

  • “Always-on” Communication – indications here were around an expectation that employees should respond anytime the owner requested, regardless of work hours. Slack messages or texts might come in the very early hours of the morning or late at night; well after a person’s shift or the breweries business hours.

Email Correspondence Sent to Craft Beer Austin after the 10/3 Phone Call with Mrs. Hill

Source: This was emailed to me directly and included a personal picture (from our blog) and my home address for reasons I can only assume are intimidation-related. I am not hard to find.

Additional Topics Discussed on the 10/3 Call with Mrs. Hill

The call with Mrs. Hill lasted about 20 minutes. During the conversation, we discussed many of the above mentioned items of which my team has been made aware over the past several weeks. I mentioned that I felt the nature and amount of potential controversies rose to a level where I needed to consider reporting on it. Therefore, I wanted to give them a direct chance to respond. In addition to responding to these incidents, we also spoke in depth about actions and plans that Austin Craft Brewing Company has in place for the growth and longevity of the business.

Mrs. Hill specifically mentioned the following focus areas that the brewery has active now or is in the process of completing:

  • Working to include more frequent and recurring events. Some current events include things like:

    • Bonsai bar

    • Ceramics class

    • Dance groups

    • Paint nights

  • The brewery is working towards expansion into a 2nd room. This includes (or will soon include) amenities, such as:

    • TVs

    • Pool table

    • Foosball

    • Stage (for future live music events as the weather cools)

  • They are working towards a future Seltzer-focused cocktail program

  • Sunday brunch – mimosa offerings paired with their standing food truck brunch options

While Austin Craft Brewing Company appears to be taking steps toward growth, the concerns raised by former employees and community members merit attention. We will continue to monitor the situation as it unfolds.
