Best of the Worst: What to Order at Your Cancun All-Inclusive

Pam and I recently returned from a fantastic trip to Mexico. While it isn’t renowned for its beer scene, we’ve been visiting every couple of years, and I’ve picked up a few tips on what to order at all-inclusive resorts. Typically, you’ll find a standard beer on tap, usually Dos Equis or Corona, but if you know who to ask and how to ask, most resorts offer several other options. While liquor might be a more consistent choice, if you prefer beer, here are my recommendations:

1) Superior

By both name and taste, this is the best Mexican lager you will find south of the border.

2) Modelo Especial

Having recently taken over the number one spot for beer sales in the US, this is a solid resort option when available.

3) Victoria

This is apparently the oldest Mexican lager, and it’s pretty good and worthy of ordering even when there are other options.

4) Bohemia Clara

A solid option in a sea of average choices. This is where the list switches from pretty good to any port in a storm.

5) Indio

Completely average. I would take Indio over some lagers in Central Texas, but not many.

6) Tecate

While I would definitely drink this without argument, the enjoyment here comes more from the abv than the taste.

7) Anything Else

Carta Blanca, Estrella, Montejo, etc., may be available at some resorts, but not at the ones I have visited so far. My main point here is that anything is better than the last two options.

8) Dos Equis

The best thing about Dos Equis in Mexico is its abundance. Drink it fast because they have plenty more.

9) Corona

“No, Gimli, I would not take the road through Moria unless I had no other choice.” This sums up my thoughts on Corona.

In summary, you are probably better off ordering a Margarita or a Cuba Libre (my favorite), but I hope this ranked list helps with your beer choosing when your options are limited at your next All-Inclusive.
