Beerburg Brewing Co. Announces Closure

The closing party is planned for January 20, 2024

Beerburg Brewing Co. announced today they will be closing on January 20, 2024, which is ironically their fourth anniversary. The brewery opened its doors in the Hill Country on January 20, 2020, and was only open for a few months before being forced to close due to the pandemic. For the next few months, the brewery rode the rollercoaster of constant rule changes prompting opening and closing over and over again. Despite the challenges, Beerburg continued to innovate releasing unique beers connecting customers with the outdoors by featuring locally foraged ingredients in both the beer and the dining experience, and was consistently recognized for their great beer and community support.

CBA spoke to founder Trevor Nearburg about the closure, below is a summary of his responses:

“For the past six months, all the strategies we put in place were ultimately not enough and reorganization would have required letting people go, restructuring everything, and ultimately would result in the brewery still losing money,” he states.

As for many breweries, the cost of goods has made a big impact on operating costs over the past year, but each brewery has a unique situation, “traffic patterns [of customers] made it difficult for us to plan, so labor costs were a large part of it. We’d get a big influx of customers where we could barely keep up, and then have days of light traffic, all the while keeping the same level of labor because the patterns were unpredictable,” he says, “When people decide to go out one day less, we lose 30% of our sales for the week.”

With so many recent closures, property and lease issues have played a large part in the (sometimes sudden) decision to close. However, that is not the case with Beerburg as the property is family-owned, “we would have been forced to close a lot sooner if it weren’t for the property; however, it is no longer a viable option to remain open,” says Nearburg.
