Twitter: @andrewlschwab Untappd: aschwab My craft beer journey started sometime in university when light beer just was not cutting it anymore. I started venturing out to the beer store and buying any 6 pack that I had not had before. This has now continued for ten years. You will see me visiting almost any and every brewery that I can. I have a passion for travel, craft beer, and college football. When I am not drinking craft beer, I work as a manufacturing engineer in Austin.

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals March 4 2016

The biggest news this week has got to be that Wicked Weed Brewing is coming to Texas. Now, Wicked Weed’s distribution, up to this point, has been fairly limited outside of their state (and very few states even get it). So, this is a big “get” for Texas. Along with Wicked Weed, Anthem Brewing (OKC) also received brewery approval. On to the beer labels, Last Stand is starting to get their bottles approved. You should […]

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals February 26 2016

For this week’s TABC label approvals it looks like the heavily delayed Cantillon now has their second approval. Along with that, we have a lot of new cans showing up. Independence made a good decision and is now canning their Austin Amber (with a solid choice of can art). Blackwater Draw (in College Station) is also looking at canning their IPA. They recently opened a second location that will focus on production in Bryan, which

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals February 19 2016

Definitely seemed like a slower week for TABC approvals. I am guessing someone was on vacation at the TABC because most of these beers were approved last week and then they start back up on the 17th (I should note that the system is delayed so when I say they are from last week, they showed up this week on the system but approved last week). The dates on approvals usually are most days of

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals February 12 2016

The clear place to start here is that the first Cantillon is TABC approved. With that said, expect 3 more to be approved in the near future. They seemed to have gotten caught up in the TABC approval for longer than most just due to inconsistent ABV testing (or so I have heard). Either way, the first one is through, there are more coming. Guadalupe Brewing (New Braunfels) seems to be starting to put out

Texas Beer Growth & Trends 2006 to 2015 via TABC Approvals

The TABC is definitely not one of the most popular government agencies among beer fans in Texas. While their laws can be quite restrictive against beer in general (but for some reason, much looser for things like distilleries and wineries), it does provide us with some interesting data. Thanks to the system in place, I can access all of the label approvals and look at the Texas beer growth & trends from 2006 to 2015.

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals February 5 2016

I was somewhat expecting a brewery approval to come through from Bruery Terreux to cover all of The Bruery’s sour program, but that did not this week. I am guessing we will see that sometime in the near future. As Flood has stated, we should start to see The Bruery in March 2016 for Austin. For the rest of Texas, it is still up in the air on when they will be seeing it. This

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals January 29 2016

Well, the obvious thing to start with here is that The Bruery is coming to Texas. Yes, this will also be in Austin and not just DFW (like Funkwerks, New Holland, AleSmith, etc). I have no real idea when it will show up as it still has to get label approvals to go through, so likely still at least a month out. Next, I want to call out Abita on something. How do you make

A Look at Out of State Brewery Distribution to Texas

Every week, it seems, more and more breweries are entering into the Texas market. I decided to create a list of every American “craft” brewery that currently has rights to sell in Texas. I should clarify a couple of TABC rules that regulate breweries coming into Texas. In order for an out of state brewery, to sell beer in Texas, they must apply for a license (as a brewery) to sell here. This costs in the area

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals January 22 2016

Over the last week, we started seeing Knee Deep show up in stores in Austin. It looks like their kegs will be following right after based on these approvals. Along with this, I take it this is why Alesmith released all their beers in DFW this week – all of their keg approvals just came through. Then you have Braindead Brewing (Dallas) who received their first bottle approval. It will likely be used for events

TABC Label and Brewery Approvals January 15 2016

A long list this week for label approvals. I guess it makes up for the last two weeks of slow approvals? This week sees a shift from kegs (over last week) to a bunch of can approvals. There were over 20 can labels approved this week for various Texas and national breweries. Now, we are also seeing the recent AB-InBev purchases of 10 Barrel and Elysian showing up on approvals. That is no real surprise, they
