Below is Part 2 of a 2 Part Series that will announce the Austin area Black is Beautiful releases.

What is the Black is Beautiful project? It is the creation of San Antonio’s Weathered Souls Head Brewer & Co-Owner, Marcus Baskerville raising awareness of the injustices people of color face. “With the current tensions that are rising we thought that it was of grave importance to start the Black Is Beautiful initiative. We took a stout recipe and decided to call on our peers in the brewing industry to collaborate in unison for equality and inclusion amongst people of color. All proceeds from the purchase of these releases will be donated to local funds that support police brutality reform and legal defenses,” Baskerville states on the Black is Beautiful Beer site.

Black is Beautiful has seen over 1,000 breweries worldwide participating at this point. Texas has responded with over 100 breweries joining and Austin area breweries have jumped on board in the fight for justice and inclusion. To read more about this worldwide initiative click here.

Part 1 Involved early July releases whereas Part 2, below, lists late July, August & September versions. Regarding their participation, each brewery was asked the following:

  • Why they feel it is important for their brewery to participate in this project & what inspires them about it
  • What their release date is
  • What organization they will be donating the beer’s proceeds to
  • A description of their version of the Imperial Stout

Jester King Brewery

“Community concern is a core tenet of our brewery, & while we are proud to contribute to our charitable programs the question we most often ask ourselves is is ‘what more can we do?’ for our community — knowing that it’ll never be enough. As Dr. Colette Pierce Burnette, President of Huston-Tillotson University, recently stated, we must ask ourselves “am I in a moment or am I in a movement?” We aspire & commit everyday to be a positive force in the movement for community concern & social reform. My greatest personal concern is that those breweries participating to raise awareness & funds for reform & legal defense do not relegate this initiative to an act of performative allyship. Rather that this collaboration brew should be the first of the many long overdue steps, to commit to listen, speak out and address injustices. We do what we can to use our platform to amplify the voices of & call attention to others who are affecting cultural & societal shifts. Our entire team at Jester King is proud & humbled to support Marcus and Weathered Souls with the Black is Beautiful initiative.” | Debbie Cerda, Volunteer Corps & Community Engagement Coordinator

“Beer is something we enjoy in good company. We grab a couple of beers, sit around the table, tell stories, share experiences…we laugh, we cry…beer has a way of bringing people together. And it is important that our industry takes a hard look at some uncomfortable truths happening in our communities. This isn’t an issue we should sit out, it’s a chance to support, and better ourselves and our communities.” | Myk O’Connor, Marketing Manager

Whitestone Brewery

“This is an extremely important and overdue movement.  Thanks to Weathered Souls, this excellent idea created a way for all breweries to take action by doing what we already do day in and day out, make beer.  Doing this during the current Covid-19 pandemic definitely presents certain unique challenges, but I think it may also be advantageous to make this stay front and center.  Either way, all of us here at Whitestone make a concerted effort to treat each other (and all) with respect whether we agree with each other or not, so anytime we can help bring more love to the world and lessen the hate, we’re all in.” | Ryan Anglen, Owner/Operator
